Hi Dan! It's not mediocre, I think you just got carried away by your midtones, which can happen to anyone :) There are a couple of easy fixes here. On the first one, the eye needs some more white in there, almost the entire eyeball is black right now. The underside of the nose should be dark and the top lip a little thicker. As for the second one, the right half of the face should be lighter than the rest. If you look at the reference, it's quite white in comparison to the greys in the rest of the picture. Overall, minor critiques. Keep up the good work!
